Mentalyc vs Upheal

Updated October 23, 2026

Therapists usually pick an AI note tool based on how it fits their week: how many sessions they run, which records system they keep, and whether they want to switch systems at all. Mentalyc and Upheal both write progress notes from a recorded session and both post their prices, but Mentalyc sells tiers capped by note count to clinicians who keep their EHR, while Upheal pairs uncapped notes with an EHR the whole practice can move onto. Your caseload and your plans for the current EHR settle most of this decision.

Our analysts compared Mentalyc and Upheal on price, note limits, EHR fit, free options, and results, using the HIR review of each company and each vendor's pricing page checked today. In the following sections, we compare them in one table, describe the therapist each one suits, and list what Upheal released in September.

Which fits which buyer

Count your monthly sessions before you compare tiers.

Choose Mentalyc if

  • You keep SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, or Jane and want notes sent to the chart.
  • You see few enough clients that a capped tier costs less than a flat fee.
  • You run group sessions and want group notes on the Super plan.

Choose Upheal if

  • You want to begin on a free plan.
  • You carry a full caseload and want no cap on notes.
  • You may move scheduling, payments, and claims into one EHR later.

Verdict

Upheal scores higher and suits therapists with full caseloads or a plan to replace their EHR. Mentalyc suits solo clinicians who keep their current system and see few enough clients that a lower tier covers them.

A light caseload on Mentalyc's smallest tier costs less than Upheal's paid notes plan, so check your note count against both price lists.

What Upheal shipped in September 2026

Upheal: Upheal added an import tool on September 30, 2026 that takes the export from a previous EHR, splits it into documents, and files each one in the right client chart. On September 21, 2026, it let clinicians talk to its assistant by voice and expanded the practice reports it had launched days earlier.

Ask Upheal whether the import handles the export format your current EHR produces.
