Videa
Florian Hillen is the founder and chief executive of Videa, a dental AI company based in Boston, Massachusetts, whose FDA-cleared software flags disease on dental X-rays for dental groups and practices.
Medicine and Research
He studied medicine in Germany, passing the first state exam, and earned a bachelor's degree in management and technology. He worked for McKinsey & Company and founded ninu, a digital health startup, before going to MIT, where he earned master's degrees in computer science and in technology and policy.
At MIT's Institute for Data, Systems and Society and at Harvard Business School he researched where AI could do the most for health, looking at radiology, dermatology, ophthalmology and biology. He first expected the biggest gains in mammography and worked with five companies in that field. "I ultimately moved away from mammography because I realized AI had greater potential in dentistry."
From Delta V to Videa
His reasoning was that dental disease is missed more often than almost any other kind. His research project, then called Delta V, received its first support from MIT the summer after he graduated, and he wrote the first algorithm for the product on November 19, 2018. He patented a method that detects features on dental images and matches them to patient records.
The company, called VideaHealth for most of its history, ran pilots with dental practices before seeking FDA clearance and went on to win clearances for detecting cavities, measuring bone levels and reading X-rays of children. In April 2026 it became Videa and opened its platform to independent practices as well as large dental groups.
Becker's Hospital Review put him on its 2026 list of Rising Stars in Healthcare Under 40, and Videa was on TIME's list of the World's Top HealthTech Companies for 2026.
