Founder and CEO

Humata Health

Jeremy Friese is an interventional radiologist and the founder and chief executive of Humata Health, a company whose AI software gathers clinical records, applies insurer rules, and submits prior authorization requests for health systems and payers. He has spent close to a decade trying to automate prior authorization, the insurer approval step he once waited on for his own patients.

Training and Leading at Mayo Clinic

He earned his medical degree at Mayo Clinic, completed surgery and radiology training at Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School, and also studied at Harvard Business School.

At Mayo Clinic he practiced radiology and became a physician executive, helping lead its imaging service line, the Mayo Clinic Strategic Investment Fund, and its global business development work. His patients waited days for insurers to approve the care he ordered, and his own side of the process ran on "multiple faxes, phone calls, letters, and binders full of insurance rules," as he put it.

Founding Verata Health

He founded Verata Health, a Minneapolis, Minnesota, company, to automate prior authorization for providers and payers on what he called "both ends of the fax machine." In December 2020 Olive, a healthcare automation company, bought Verata for $120 million, and he became president of Olive's payer business.

Building Humata Health

He founded Humata Health to finish that work. In February 2026 Optum launched Digital Auth Complete, a provider tool built on Humata's technology. "With Optum, our goal is to make prior authorization virtually invisible to providers and patients," he said. He sums up how he runs the company in one line: "We're not a software business, we're a people business."
