Founder and CEO

Abacus Insights

Minal Patel is a physician turned health insurance executive who founded Abacus Insights, a Boston, Massachusetts, company that organizes health plans' data, and leads it as chief executive. Before Abacus he practiced internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, taught at Harvard Medical School, built two earlier companies, and was chief strategy officer of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.

Practicing Medicine in Boston

Patel earned a bachelor's degree and an MD at Boston University and an MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health, and trained in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he was a staff physician and Harvard Medical School faculty member for nearly a decade, according to Abacus's About page.

He moved into business gradually. “I was a full-time physician, and then I did part-time clinic and part-time research. And then I went into the business world, but I still kept my clinical practice,” he told SiliconANGLE in 2021, adding that he flew to Boston once a month to see hospital patients “because I loved it.” He left medicine in 2006.

Two Earlier Companies

Before Abacus, Patel founded Care Management International, which used offshore clinical staff to support health plans' clinical work and was sold to iHealth Technologies, now part of Cotiviti. Earlier he started Vayu Technologies, a telecommunications platform developed at Bell Labs that was spun out and sold to SeniorLink. He also worked as an associate at McKinsey & Company.

Seeing the Data Problem at Horizon

As a health plan executive, Patel found that simple questions, such as how many members with a certain disease lived in a region, could take months to answer because claims, enrollment, and authorization data sat in different systems. “And that was happening again, again and again,” he told SiliconANGLE. “I realized that we needed a company solely focused on the data layer.” In 2017 he left his role as chief strategy officer at Horizon to found Abacus, and the insurer came on as an investor.

A Name From His Son

The name Abacus came from Patel's 10-year-old son, after Patel explained that the business would help customers count. His son also pointed out that “AB” would put the company at the top of internet search results, and Patel said Abacus does come up first on his venture capital firm's website.

Data Foundations for Health Plan AI

Patel now argues that health plans need governed data before they can trust AI. When Abacus launched its Payment Integrity Suite in August 2026, he said, “Payment integrity is about far more than recovering improper payments after they occur,” and that plans need full visibility so they can identify issues earlier. Outside work he spends time with his wife and two sons, skiing in the winter and, as his company bio puts it, trying to play golf in the summer.
