Claim.MD

Rob Stuart is the founder, president, and chief executive of Claim.MD, an electronic claims clearinghouse. Medical practices and billing companies use it to send claims to insurers, receive payment files, and check patients' coverage.

Early life

He grew up in a medical and surgical clinic that his grandmother ran. In the early 1980s he was living in the oil fields of West Texas during a severe recession and starting college, just as the personal computer reached the market.

Business

A physician called his university looking for someone to make a computer talk to Medicare over the phone, and the director of its information systems department thought of Stuart. "I was able to successfully make the computer talk to Medicare over the phone," he told Medical Travel & Digital Health News. Claim.MD's first systems were custom software for doctors who were early users of electronic claims, and some of those first providers are still customers. He has a programming background from the early years of IBM.

He starts every project with the same question: "Where does it hurt? Tell me your problems." That approach took Claim.MD into workers' compensation claims about 15 years ago, where it embeds supporting documents in the claim file, and into claims for foreign health ministries that send patients to the United States for care.

In April 2026 he wrote in Physicians Practice that two years after a major cyberattack on claims routing, the industry had rebuilt the same weak structure, and that providers need more than one tested clearinghouse pathway.

Personal

He gardens and has a cat and a macaw.
