New Lantern
Shiva Suri is founder and chief executive of New Lantern, a San Francisco company that makes a cloud radiology platform. Radiology practices use its worklist, image viewer, and Curie AI assistant so their radiologists spend less time on paperwork and more time reading scans.
Early life
He grew up fascinated by inventors such as Isaac Newton and Thomas Edison and wanted to build a hoverboard as a child. "I just wanted to build cool stuff," he told Hatchline.
Business
He was an engineer at the data company Confluent when the pandemic put him in his parents' basement, sharing a home office with his mother, a radiologist. "I watched her work day in and day out, and she was wasting about seven to eight hours on boring workflow tasks," he told TechCrunch. "Only 5% of her time, she had her radiology thinking cap on." He thought: "Some startup is going to fix this and make my mom's life easier. Why can't it be me?"
He has said two early decisions shaped the company: hiring his friends as engineers, and changing its product just before the Series A from a stand-alone image viewer to one platform that combines viewing with AI reporting. New Lantern raised a $19 million Series A led by Benchmark in November 2024.
His view is that radiologists are good at finding disease and do not need AI for that part. "What they hate is the boring stuff: opening cases, organizing images, making measurements, writing reports." He wants New Lantern to be "the biggest evolution of the market since PACS was invented."
