Apricot

Trent Smith is the founder and chief executive of Apricot, which makes AI documentation software for home health agencies. He ran his own home health and hospice agency for seven years before he started the company.

Seven years running an agency

Before Apricot, Smith started and ran a home health and hospice agency for seven years. The work that bothered him most was the first visit with each new patient: "The SOC visit is supposed to set the tone for care, yet it typically means close to two hours of a nurse tapping through hundreds of required fields and checkboxes while the patient waits for meaningful interaction."

Early access to AI

In 2022 Smith's agency got early access to AI, and his team tested whether it could cut the time nurses spent on notes. A few months later, one of his nurses used an early version of what became Apricot. After five Start of Care visits, she came home to find her documentation done.

She spent that evening with her five-year-old daughter, with a tea party and dinner in place of charting. When she called Smith about it, she said: "Trent, we can't keep this to ourselves. Nurses everywhere deserve this."

A name from nursing

A few days later, Smith and his team chose the name Apricot, the traditional academic color of nursing. He presents the company as a thank-you note to the nurses, therapists, aides, and caregivers who work in patients' homes.

Backing from Insight Partners

Insight Partners led Apricot's Series A in October 2025, its first investment in an Oklahoma company. Smith chose Insight for "their reach, influence, and ability to scale category-defining companies." The plan for the round was to extend Apricot from Start of Care visits to other OASIS, therapy, and routine visits.
