Wieland Sommer

Founder and Chief Strategy Officer

Jacobian

Wieland Sommer is founder and chief strategy officer of Jacobian, the radiology reporting company formed when Smart Reporting, which he started in Munich, Germany, bought Fluency for Imaging. Its software gives radiologists dictation and report templates that follow clinical guidelines, so a referring doctor gets the findings in a set order.

Growing Up in Munich

He grew up in Munich, where his father ran a radiology practice in the Pasing district. He studied medicine in Heidelberg, Berlin, Madrid, and Lausanne, and in 2013 he earned a master of public health degree from Harvard.

Training at LMU University Hospital

He trained as a radiologist at LMU University Hospital in Munich and became a consultant there in 2013. He headed oncologic imaging at its Großhadern campus and became a professor in his early thirties, one of the youngest at the university.

Founding Smart Reporting

He founded Smart Reporting in 2014 as a spinoff of LMU. Its templates guide a radiologist through each type of study, so a report on a lung nodule or a prostate MRI covers the findings a referring doctor needs. Siemens Healthineers, GE HealthCare, and Canon distributed its software, and before the merger more than 16,000 physicians in more than 90 countries used it. In April 2024 Smart Reporting raised a €23 million Series C led by TVM Capital Life Science.

In October 2025 Smart Reporting agreed to buy Fluency for Imaging, the radiology speech recognition product built by M*Modal, from Solventum. The deal closed at the end of December 2025, and the combined company took the name Jacobian. Michael Finke, a co-founder of M*Modal, became chief executive, and Sommer became chief strategy officer.
