Bottom line

Equip is a virtual eating disorder program that treats patients at home with a medical provider, therapist, dietitian, and two mentors who have been through recovery. It is worth considering for insured families and adults who need intensive outpatient care without moving into a treatment center. Patients who need hospital-level care, or who want little structure around meals, should look elsewhere.

Equip is used by families of children and teens with eating disorders and, increasingly, by adults. Each patient gets a medical provider, a therapist, a dietitian, a peer mentor who has recovered from an eating disorder, and a family mentor who helps relatives support the patient, CNBC reported. Equip treats every eating disorder diagnosis, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), along with anxiety, depression, and OCD, and it serves patients in all 50 states, according to its homepage. For young patients, care follows family-based treatment (FBT), in which parents plan and supervise meals during the first phase.

On price, Equip is billed like other insurance-covered outpatient programs. It is in-network with plans including UnitedHealthcare, Optum, Cigna, Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Centene, plus Medicaid plans, so most patients pay copays and deductibles. That makes it far easier to reach than residential programs, which can mean months away from home. Its main competitors are Within Health and Arise, which also treat eating disorders by video, and treatment center operators such as Eating Recovery Center and The Emily Program.

Kristina Saffran, who had anorexia as a child and recovered through FBT, co-founded Equip in 2019 with Erin Parks, according to Behavioral Health Business. Saffran is chief executive.

CNBC reported that Equip doubled its staff and added 13 health plan contracts in 2025, bringing insured access to 137 million people, and raised $47 million that August. In June 2026 Equip laid off about 4% of its staff, citing market conditions, and a company representative said the business was very strong. CB Insights lists 2023 revenue of $35 million; with staff roughly doubling since, Equip's 2026 revenue is an estimated $70 million.

Patients who dislike Equip mostly describe a poor fit with one provider or with the structure of the program. One adult on Reddit says her dietitian focused on a fixed plate model and gave her little input into her meal plan, and another says the intake screening felt condescending. Equip lets patients request a different provider.

What patients say

Equip has no reviews on Trustpilot. Here is what patients say about it on Reddit.

"While individual teams can occasionally be hit or miss, they let you request a provider change if you want one, AND the groups they offer each week are invaluable." Reddit

"My dietician was SO obsessed with the “Equip Plate” and was all she focused on. She wouldn’t let me have any input into my plan." Reddit

"I couldn’t get past their condescending screening." Reddit
