Two Chairs is used by adults looking for therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, relationships, substance use, and other concerns, and in some states for psychiatry. A short intake leads to a match with a licensed clinician, chosen on the client's needs, goals, and personality, and Two Chairs says appointments are available in one week or less, according to its homepage. Sessions are by video or in its clinics. Kaiser Permanente also refers some of its members to Two Chairs for therapy.

On price, Two Chairs is aimed at insured clients. Its pricing page says most clients pay less than $30 a session after meeting their deductible, and lists in-network plans including Aetna, Blue Shield of California, Florida Blue, L.A. Care, and Curative. Self-pay clients pay $260 for a first therapy appointment and $226 for each ongoing session. Its main competitors are therapist networks such as Grow Therapy, and online therapy services such as Talkspace and BetterHelp.

Founder and chief executive Alex Katz opened the first clinic in San Francisco, California, in 2017. Unlike most competitors, Two Chairs employs the vast majority of its therapists as salaried staff and trains them in measurement-based care, which tracks each client's symptoms against standard scales, Katz told TechCrunch in April 2024.

That April, Two Chairs raised $72 million in equity and debt. TechCrunch reported it had more than 500 therapists, mostly treating clients by video, and that revenue had grown eightfold over three years. Psychiatry is now offered in nine states and Washington, D.C. Two Chairs does not publish revenue; its annual revenue is an estimated $110 million.

The common complaints concern limits and turnover. Several Reddit users referred through Kaiser say they were told about a standard number of sessions partway through care, and others describe their therapist leaving and a weaker second match.

What patients say

Two Chairs has one review on Trustpilot, so we also looked at client posts on Reddit. Here is what clients like and dislike.

"I saw 3 therapists there and really liked all of them. Plus, it’s really easy to re-match with a different therapist if the first one is not a good fit." Reddit

"I've been working with a Two Chairs therapist for a few years now. They have an affiliation with Kaiser Permeate, so I found them through this. I've found the company on the whole to be good." Trustpilot

"I worked with the new one for a little bit before she told me we were approaching the “standard” amount of sessions Two Chairs does." Reddit

"I had an excellent therapist at first, but she left for her own practice. I was later matched with another therapist that I didn’t mesh well with." Reddit
