Founder
Moxe Health
Dan Wilson is the founder of Moxe Health, a Madison, Wisconsin, company that moves clinical records between health systems and health plans. He ran Moxe as chief executive for years, and Mike Coyne now holds that role.
A Detour From Finance
He studied economics and German at the University of Michigan and planned to start his career in finance. At a career fair, Epic's recruiters stood by a big sign with a cow that promised free milk to anyone who joined. He wondered, "What kind of perk is milk?" but the pitch sparked his curiosity.
He took the job at Epic and moved to Madison, Wisconsin. Within months came a global recession and the HITECH Act, the federal law that paid hospitals to adopt electronic records, and as he put it, "things really took off."
Order Sets at Epic
At 21, two weeks into the job and with no healthcare background, he was asked to build order sets for orthopedics. He did not know what orthopedic departments did and had no clinicians to ask, and the work "did not go well." His lesson from it stayed with him: "To solve most challenges in healthcare, you need both the expertise of people and the power of technology."
He went on to implement health records for large institutions across the US. That work drew his interest to clinical data and to closer ties between insurers and hospitals.
Founding Moxe Health
He founded Moxe in Madison in 2012 to make the exchange of health data between insurers and providers secure and efficient. Its first years went into building the technology and learning the market, and by 2017 the company had doubled its staff in a single year. He saw the hardest problem as the "historic distrust that exists between health plans and providers."
When Moxe won the first Best in KLAS award for payer-provider data exchange, he credited a network "rooted in trust and backed by clinical expertise." BV Investment Partners took a majority stake in Moxe in March 2026, with Wilson staying on as founder.
Pressure as a Privilege
His favorite life lesson is a line credited to Billie Jean King: "Pressure is a privilege." He sees healthcare work as stressful, but a privilege, because everyone in it chose to work on problems that matter. He runs what he calls a middleman business and admits "I wish there wasn't a need for what we do."
Community Work in Madison
In Madison he advises the United Way and works with the school district on experiential learning programs. He is a founder and board member of the HealthTech Capitol initiative at the local Chamber of Commerce.
