Michael Gao is a physician and co-founder who serves as chief executive of SmarterDx, a clinical AI company focused on documentation integrity and revenue recovery for health systems.
Before SmarterDx he worked at the intersection of clinical care and hospital operations, and has argued publicly that much of the money hospitals lose in coding and CDI is still sitting in charts clinicians already wrote.
Under his leadership the company has positioned its product as post-encounter AI for CDI and coding teams rather than ambient note generation, and raised growth capital including a New Mountain Capital investment to expand health-system deployments.
