Murj

Butka is trying to free device clinic nurses and doctors from paperwork, so they can spend their time on patients with pacemakers and defibrillators.

From Florida to Apple

Todd Butka is the founder and chief executive of Murj, a company that makes software for clinics that follow patients with pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, and other heart devices. He grew up in Florida and moved to California to work for Apple, where he was a product development manager, according to a Murj profile.

Inside the Device Clinic

Butka joined the cardiac rhythm management industry in 2005 and spent three years at Guidant and six years at Medtronic, working closely with device clinics and helping implant pacemakers and defibrillators. He was struck by how far clinic software lagged behind the phones and email he used every day. "As great as the technology is that's implanted, the technology to manage the information coming out of the devices hadn't really evolved at the pace that the devices had," he told MD+DI in 2017.

The Murj profile describes a long summer he spent on recall management, working through pages of device serial numbers with no easy way to find the patients.

Founding Murj

He founded Murj in late 2014. Leaving a corporate career was hard, he told MD+DI: "Raising the money was something I had never done before. I was a career corporate guy." True Ventures led the company's Series A, and investors were reassured that reimbursement already followed the implanted devices. "I'm not creating a technology where I have to lobby Medicare for reimbursement," he said.

Murj's platform is now used by more than 1,000 US device clinics that follow over 900,000 patients. In 2026 the company launched in Australia and New Zealand and added remote patient monitoring for blood pressure and weight. "Murj RPM was built to help clinics focus on the patients who need attention, not sift through every normal reading," Butka said at the August 2026 launch.

Life Outside Work

Butka has a family and still surfs. He describes his goal at Murj as getting everyone "out of the office with a clean slate and a clean mind, so we can get back to the heart of the matter."
