ShiftMed

Todd Walrath is the founder and chief executive of ShiftMed, a McLean, Virginia, company whose software and network of W-2 clinicians help hospitals fill open shifts. He came to healthcare staffing from digital media, by way of two senior care websites.

Digital Media

Walrath began his career in digital media and interactive marketing, with leadership roles at Weather.com, AOL, and LEADS.com, which AOL acquired, according to a HyperTrack profile.

Four Months to Find Care for His Grandmother

His move into healthcare started when he spent four months helping his grandmother find an assisted living facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. "I wanted to basically try to shave off four months of my life that I spent for other people on a pay-it-forward basis," he told HyperTrack.

He founded SeniorLiving.net in 2008 to help families find senior housing, and RealPage acquired it in 2011, according to ShiftMed's history. He launched HomeCare.com in 2014 to connect families with in-home care providers.

Building ShiftMed

Working with care facilities, Walrath saw how hard it was for them to find nurses, and in 2018 he started ShiftMed to link long-term care facilities with local nursing assistants who wanted per diem work. It has since added nurses and allied health workers and moved into hospitals and health systems.

In 2025, ShiftMed supported more than 631,000 shifts, according to the company. "We're helping them move beyond reactive staffing by using AI to make better use of their internal teams and float pools before turning to external labor," Walrath said in a September 2026 announcement.
