Josiah Meyer

Co-founder and CEO

Healthleap

Josiah Meyer is co-founder and chief executive of Healthleap, which uses AI to flag hospital patients who may have undiagnosed malnutrition, delirium, and other conditions. He grew up in South Africa, ran his first businesses as a teenager, and studied actuarial science and machine learning before building the company with his sister, dietitian Jemima Meyer.

Actuarial Science and Machine Learning in South Africa

Meyer studied actuarial science and machine learning at the University of the Free State, according to The Open Letter, a South African tech newsletter. Before Healthleap, he was product manager at a crypto- and AI-focused asset management startup co-founded by Ray Botha, now Healthleap's chief technology officer, according to NutriLeap's About page.

From a Dietitian's Spreadsheet to NutriLeap

His sister Jemima studied dietetics at the same university. During her community service at the South African Military Health Service, she saw how many malnourished patients went unnoticed and built a spreadsheet to help colleagues do nutrition calculations faster. In 2021 she brought in Josiah as chief executive and Botha as chief technology officer to turn it into an app called NutriLeap.

Building Healthleap for U.S. Hospitals

The founders based the company in San Francisco and aimed it at U.S. hospitals, where Medicare's per-admission payments rise when a complication such as malnutrition is documented. Meyer told TechCrunch that the most telling signs appear in clinicians' written notes: “poor appetite, recent weight loss, muscle loss, trouble swallowing.” Healthleap grew from three hospital partners to more than 50 in a year, and in October 2026 it reported $38 million in seed and Series A funding from Sequoia Capital, First Round Capital, and Hummingbird Ventures.
