Theator

Recommend Scored Nov 2026

Theator is a surgical intelligence company whose Surgery-to-Text platform analyzes intraoperative video with computer vision to produce structured, billing-ready operative reports and procedure insights for hospitals and surgeons.

theator.io

Strong fit

  • Health systems that want operative reports written from video instead of memory
  • OR leaders measuring quality and safety across laparoscopic and robotic cases
  • Revenue-cycle teams that lose dollars when operative notes miss procedure detail

Weak fit

  • Hospitals with little laparoscopic or robotic video infrastructure
  • Teams that only need simple dictation and already have ambient note tools they like
  • Buyers who need a published per-case price without a sales process

Bottom line

Theator reads what happens in the operating room from the surgical video and drafts the operative report for surgeons to review. It is worth piloting for hospitals that already capture OR video and want more accurate documentation, quality data, and coding support. It depends on video-ready ORs and a sales-led deployment, so it is not a quick add-on for every hospital.

Theator captures video from existing laparoscopic and robotic cameras, runs a surgical AI model trained on hundreds of thousands of procedures, and produces a structured operative report that surgeons review and sign. Unlike ambient dictation tools that transcribe what a surgeon says, Surgery-to-Text analyzes what the surgeon does on video. The company's site says the platform has analyzed more than 600,000 procedures across more than 150 procedure types, and that US deployments include Mayo Clinic and UHealth Miami.

A peer-reviewed Mayo Clinic study in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons found AI-generated reports were more accurate than surgeon-written reports from memory (the company cites 87.3% versus 72.8% accuracy). On June 24, 2026, Oracle Health and Theator announced a US partnership so Surgery-to-Text can deliver reports into Oracle Health EHRs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Competitors include OR video and telementoring platforms such as Proximie, smart-OR systems such as Artisight, and ambient clinical documentation tools that stop short of watching the surgical field. Pricing is sales-led and not published.

The open questions are workflow adoption and cost. Surgeons must trust and edit AI drafts, hospitals need camera-ready ORs, and integration work varies by EHR. Theator also does not publish revenue; its revenue is an estimated $12 million a year, based on its funding history, reported procedure volume, and enterprise hospital footprint.

Tamir Wolf, MD, PhD, co-founded Theator and is CEO. In the Oracle announcement he said the partnership changes how surgical data enters the health record, starting with the operative report.

What surgeons and buyers say

What people like

"Surgery is where a hospital's greatest clinical risk meets its greatest financial investment. ... we never had structured data from the procedure itself." Theator site

"Getting a draft report before we leave the OR cuts pajama-time charting after long cases."

What people don't like

"If your rooms do not already record laparoscopic or robotic video cleanly, the project starts with infrastructure, not software."

"We still edit every note. Accuracy is better than memory, but it is not a one-click sign-off yet."
