Bottom line

Verisma is one of the larger release of information vendors, handling medical record requests for providers and health plans with its own staff and AI-assisted software. It suits health information departments that want to hand off request volume and compliance risk, and many customers describe it as responsive. Requesters such as law firms are less happy, and some customers report staff turnover and limited EHR integration.

Verisma is used by health information management departments at hospitals, physician groups, and health plans. When a patient, attorney, or other third party asks for copies of medical records, Verisma's staff and software log the request, check that it is valid, pull the right pages, and deliver them. Its Verisma Release Manager software runs that workflow, and an AI review step flags sensitive content, though Verisma says on its release of information page that AI never makes release decisions and that trained people decide and sign off on each release.

Much of the cost of release of information falls on the people asking for records. One KLAS respondent said Verisma has a set rate and bills the requester, and another said their organization does not pay Verisma at all because Verisma only handles billable requests. PitchBook lists Datavant, MRO, and Medchart among Verisma's competitors. Among companies we review, Moxe Health also runs release of information for health systems, and Health Gorilla moves records through national networks.

Verisma has been in business for more than 24 years and says it serves more than 20,000 clients in all 50 states. In 2023 it merged with ScanSTAT, another release of information firm, in a deal funded by NewSpring, and in November 2024 it bought Olah, a medical records company, according to PitchBook, which lists about 2,000 employees. Verisma does not publish revenue; we estimate it at about $140 million a year.

Black Book Research ranked Verisma its top release of information vendor for the eighth year in a row in its 2027 report, published in October 2026, which surveyed 2,317 people and found Verisma leading on 13 of 18 measures.

KLAS comments are mostly positive about responsiveness and turnaround times. The complaints are about staff turnover, a price increase, and weak EHR integration. Requesters are harsher: paralegals on Reddit describe overcharges, duplicate records, and unanswered follow-ups.
